Rating out of 10: 7/10
Type: Fictional
Genre: Western / Country
Readability: Easy to read
Discussion: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is an interesting book that takes the reader through the fictional journey of two men as they work on farms in California. The two main characters Lennie and George whom seem to be somewhat hopeless at keeping a job and being able to get themselves through life. Set in California during the great depression the books scenery is of destitute hard-working farm labourers who struggle to make ends meet and seemingly cannot ever get ahead in life. The typical blue-collar struggles are well depicted in this novel and Steinbeck is able to paint vivid images of characters and scenery throughout the book. The storyline does feature a pretty big plot twist so I won’t give too much away, but it’s worth hanging on to the end of the book to fully understand why this novel became popular.
Audience: Suits a late teenage audience and above
Conclusion: A good enjoyable book but I wouldn’t deem it as a must read.
